5 Points of Yoga: You May Practice Yoga Daily... But Do You Know Its 5 Secret Points?

For many of us yoga is the workout that helps to keep our lives together and our minds composed. But it’s not just a workout - beyond postures there are 5 points of yoga that are often overlooked but are key to yoga philosophy. Your yoga instructor may use them in their practice but not explicitly teach you that. So let me introduce you to these 5 points.

Point 1 – Proper Exercise (Asana)

The first one seems familiar, doesn’t it? The point is to hear your body and understand what movement you need today.

When practiced regularly, asanas prevent stiffness, release stress built up in your body, and improve energy flow within you. Think of it as keeping the body healthy so it can support the mind and spirit.

Point 2 – Proper Breathing (Pranayama)

You may have noticed how much emphasis your yoga instructor places on breathing through the practice.

Breathing simply keeps us alive. Read this again.

We take it for granted - breathing shallowly, especially when life is busy and stressful - literally taking away from ourselves the life energy.

Through yoga we learn to breathe deeply to fill up ourselves with life force.

Point 3 – Proper Relaxation (Savasana & rest)

Yoga practice always ends with Savasana - laying down in stillness and simply resting. Rest is an important point in yoga philosophy.

Constant stress drains the nervous system. Relaxation is not laziness — it’s a reset.

Yogic relaxation teaches you to release tension at will, restore energy, and balance body and mind.

Point 4 – Proper Diet (Yogic nutrition)

Surprised to see connection between yoga and food? Well, yoga is so much more than what we’re used to hear about it. Yoga is a holistic philosophy that teaches us to care for our bodies, so food is part of it.

Yogic philosophy emphasizes simple, natural, fresh foods (a sattvic diet) that nourish body and mind.

The idea is simple - what you eat directly shapes how you feel, think, and even how stable your mind becomes in meditation.

Point 5 – Positive Thinking & Meditation

Our minds are more powerful than we think - they shape our reality, both short-term (like choosing to read this) and long-term (like choosing to be healthy). Positive thinking in yoga means cultivating clarity, calmness, and resilience.

Meditation allows us to return to positivity, creating a future of our dreams, instead of fears. Meditation helps to quiet the endless stream of thoughts, bringing inner peace, self-awareness, and a deeper connection to purpose. Through meditation we peel off the external layers that block the connection with our souls.

In essence, these five points aren’t just about yoga class. They’re a holistic lifestyle approach designed to keep you balanced, healthy, and happy.

I weave these points into all my yoga classes, helping you make the right choices for yourself, for your body and for your mind… Just the way I once chose that for myself.
